Geothermal leader Energy Development Corporation (EDC) bagged eight Quill awards from the recently concluded 2013 Philippine Quill Awards, the country’s highest and most comprehensive recognition in business communication.
This year, EDC was named second runner-up for company of the year, after reaping five excellence awards and two merit citations.
Award of Excellence were given to 2012 Integrated Annual and Sustainability Report: It’s Possible; Sustainability: It’s Our Story (AVP); The EDC Geothermal Value Chain Video; Geothermal: A Clean Power Solution (EDC Geothermal Handbook); and A Kaleidoscope Earth — the 2013 EDC wall/desk calendars and planner.
By integrating the annual and sustainability report, EDC has allowed the creative and technical working teams to tell the story of EDC’s relentless pursuit – despite adversity – to deliver on its strategy, restore investor confidence and demonstrate sustainability management leadership in the energy industry.
Meanwhile, the Sustainability AVP aims to re-orient employees to EDC’s sustainable business beginnings as well as create awareness and inspiration to support the company’s industry leadership in advancing clean energy business both here in the Philippines and abroad.
The Geothermal Value Chain Video showcases EDC’s business model which integrates environmental management and social responsibility as it generates steam. This complex science was broken down into simple terms that anyone can easily understand and storytelling was used to capture their attention.
The Geothermal Handbook complements EDC’s value chain video and serves as a laymanized brochure on how EDC generates steam responsibly and sustainably. Colorful infographics were used to make it more appealing to the stakeholders, even to the students in the communities who have always used the geothermal diagram in science class.
For the past eighteen years, the EDC calendar is produced primarily as a Christmas gift to its employees and stakeholders. One of the most useful, practical and well appreciated corporate gifts; the calendar is a cheap advertising alternative to increase awareness of its corporate mission and goals, enhance company image and strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders.
EDC also received two Merit Awards for the Kananga-EDC Institute of Technology (KEITECH) — multi-partner educational project that was established to equip high school graduates in EDC’s host communities with the top labor skills that are locally and globally in demand through a multi-disciplinary training program that puts special focus on values formation; and Gearing for Growth: The 2013 EDC Leaders Assembly. Five hundred-strong managers and supervisors gathered to respond to the call to action as the strategic vision to industry leadership and business transformation strategy was unveiled.
The Quill award is given yearly by the International Association of Business Communicators to outstanding communication programs. Receiving the awards are (L-R) Mark Lonzaga, Frances Ariola, Fernando Diaz de Rivera, Ivy Henson, Dave Devilles and Ricky Mina.

EDC also strives to provide the best customer service it can to all its clients by having helpful salespeople and easy to understand contracts. EDC takes its mission as a renewable energy provider seriously and goes beyond sustainability by investing in programs that enhance the environment and empower its partner communities, thereby fostering regenerative development. The company has also been working toward being carbon-neutral by improving its energy efficiency, as well as implementing various greening projects to ensure that its mission to provide future generations with a better life remains intact.
