Energy Development Corporation Security Officer Arthur S. Veloso turns over food items to one of the three police stations in Ormoc City.
Just as doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers take care of the sick in the battle against COVID-19, members of the police force also serve the country as they tirelessly man different checkpoints, assist in distributing relief packages, and ensure that quarantine measures are strictly adhered to.
Sometimes, the police are deployed without sufficient protection, given the lack of supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) kits. As of June 1, the number of police officers infected with Covid-19 has reached 315 according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Health Service. They are also monitoring 696 probable cases and 677 suspect cases.
Still, the police force have shown their determination and continue to do their duty in protecting the citizens, day and night, amidst the pandemic. In Leyte, the police stand by their local government in strictly enforcing health and safety measures to prevent further spread of the virus. Because of this, the Energy Development Corporation offers their support and assistance to the members of the police force by donating food items to five police stations in Ormoc and Kananga. Included in the donations were boxes of assorted canned goods, packs of 3-in-1 coffee, and sacks of rice.
Last May 7 and 8, EDC Security Officer Arthur Veloso turned over the goods to three police stations in Ormoc; the Ormoc City Police office, 8th Regional Mobile Force (8RMFB), the Leyte Provincial Police Office 8; and the Army Units 93IB, 802 IB and Delta station in Tongonan. With this assistance, EDC hopes that it can help ease the mind of each officer who left their own family to make sure that citizens stay indoors and stay safe.
“Most of us donate personal protective equipment and food to our health care workers but we should not forget that we also have our police officers who have sacrificed a lot as well to perform their sworn duties and keep us safe”, says Erwin Magallanes, EDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility Head for Leyte.
“The Ormoc City Police plays a very vital role in the enforcement of quarantine rules and regulations. They are leading the border controls or checkpoints, they implement curfew and other measures to ensure law and order within the city while in strict quarantine. They are also frontliners. This is our simple way of thanking our police frontliners. They also share their blessing with the less fortunate who are suffering from this pandemic”, he adds.
Even as the government slowly eases quarantine and lockdown measures, members of the police force are determined to stay vigilant in doing their part to ensure that all sanitary measures are followed by the public.
EDC’s Leyte geothermal facility that straddles between Ormoc City and the Municipality of Kananga currently supplies more than 30 percent of the country’s installed geothermal capacity. It is also responsible for putting EDC and the Philippines on the map as the world’s 3rd largest geothermal producer for over 40 years.
The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is a pioneer in generating 100% clean, renewable, and reliable power as an electricity supplier in the Philippines for over 40 years. With power plants all over Visayas and Mindanao, the company is one of the biggest producers of geothermal energy in Asia and is expanding its reach in the international market, allowing it to offer customers affordable energy rates. EDC also strives to provide the best customer service it can to all its clients by having helpful salespeople and easy to understand contracts. Because of all of this, it is poised to become the premier supplier of electricity for the Philippines’ Green Energy Option Program. EDC takes its mission as a renewable energy provider seriously and goes beyond sustainability by investing in programs that enhance the environment and empower its partner communities, thereby fostering regenerative development. The company has also been working toward being carbon-neutral by improving its energy efficiency, as well as implementing various greening projects to ensure that its mission to provide future generations with a better life remains intact.
