The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB5) commended First Gen-owned 100% renewable energy provider and the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal energy producer Energy Development Corporation (EDC), as one of its stakeholders with Best Environmental Initiatives. It is the first time the environment department has conferred recognition for such a category.

This certificate of commendation was awarded to EDC-Bac-Man Geothermal Power Plant for its exemplary environmental efforts in celebration of the Philippine Environment Month in June.

EDC-Bacman is one of the stakeholders recognized for the best practices and initiatives to comply with the various environmental laws being implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau V (DENR-EMB5). DENR-EMB5 key officers handed the certificate of recognition to EDC-Bacman representatives (from left to right) Provincial Officer for Camarines Sur Lilian Ornido, OIC-Chief for Monitoring and Enforcement Division Jocelyn Vinas, Chief for Clearance and Permitting Division Henry Lopez, Regional Director Maria Socorro Abu, EDC-Bacman Facility Head Marcel Rosario, BGI Environment Officer Debbie Anne Mortega, EDC-Bacman Pollution Control Office Ramon Parafina III, and DENR-EMB5 Provincial Officer for Albay Jose Rey Monreal.


In his acceptance message, EDC-Bac-Man Facility Head Marcel Rosario committed to being responsible leaders in the energy sector. “Beyond producing clean, reliable, and stable energy, we will continue to take the lead and remain active in forest restoration and biodiversity preservation. We will commit ourselves to these efforts to maintain the robust ecosystem services for the use of all our stakeholders in our geothermal reservations and secure our natural heritage for the benefit of future generations,” Rosario said.

Rosario expressed his gratitude to the DENR-EMB5 for encouraging and recognizing companies like EDC to build a low-carbon world. 

“This award inspires us even more to pursue the green path. It is an affirmation that we are doing the right thing and that we are not alone in our advocacy,” Rosario added 

Bac-Man Geothermal Inc (BGI) owns and operates the 150-MW Bac-Man Geothermal Power Plant, a facility nestled on a 25,000-hectare geothermal reservation that straddles Bacon, Sorsogon City, and Manito, Albay in the Bicol region.

Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is First Gen Corporation’s 100% RE subsidiary with over 1,480MW total installed capacity that accounts for 19 percent of the country’s total installed RE capacity. Its 1,188MW geothermal portfolio comprises 62 percent of the country’s total installed geothermal capacity and is the 3rd largest geothermal producer in the world. ###
