After super typhoon Yolanda ravaged through the province of Leyte, EDC immediately extended assistance to nearby communities.
The Lopez Group, through EDC, volunteered to be a development sponsor under the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR) headed by Secretary Panfilo Lacson.
As part of the Lopez Group’s focus on education and livelihood, EDC has partnered with ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc. (ALKFI) for the school rebuilding project. EDC also provided short term training courses designed by the company’s technical school in Kananga (KEITECH) for household heads in the nearby communities.
EDC is managing the construction of 64 new classrooms as well as the repair of 10 damaged classrooms in a total of 23 school sites, using donor funds provided by Sagip Kapamilya through The Filipino Channel (TFC).
Industry experts Sy^2 and Associates and W.V. Coscolluela and Casas Architects were consulted for the building’s structural integrity and building’s design, respectively. These new classrooms are built to withstand 250 KPH wind factor, as prescribed by the DPWH.
The classrooms have thicker walls and better-installed roof frames, while high ceilings allow for cross ventilation. The classrooms come with lights, male and female toilets, blackboard, chairs, and PWD access. The classrooms are estimated to cost 1.2 M each.
The pilot phase began in March 2014, which includes four (4) school sites with 24 classrooms. These were turned over to the schools and Department of Education last September 23, 2014.
Construction is on-going for the second phase, composed of 50 classrooms in 19 school sites. These will be completed by the end of the year.
The classrooms are being built in the towns of Ormoc, Kananga, Isabel, Merida, Albuera and Palo in Leyte. A total of 19,872 students, the combined student population of all 23 schools sites, will benefit from this school rebuilding project.
A total of 1,080 trainees are also targeted to benefit from the livelihood program at KEITECH from 2014 to 2016. Training courses include plumbing and electrical installation.
