BURGOS, Ilocos Norte, 29 April 2020 —- Lopez-led pioneer renewable energy company Energy Development Corporation (EDC) continues to provide clean power to the province while extending help to its partner community here amid the threats brought by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Deborra Sabarre-Melchor, Corporate Social Responsibility Head of EDC subsidiary EDC Burgos Wind Power Corporation (EBWPC) said the company has been providing assistance to various local communities, especially to those that host its wind and solar power farms here in Brgy. Poblacion, during this crisis situation.
“We have been finding ways to help our partner communities in these trying times. We understand the challenge of immobility due to the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to prevent the spread of COVID-19 ,” said Sabarre.
Aside from lending three 20-ft container vans with mattresses to the local government of Burgos, Ilocos Norte as an isolation area for suspected and probable COVID-19 cases in the area, EDC has also donated relief packages and health care equipment to the local community.
Nearly 3,500 households in Burgos and Ilocos Norte benefitted from the food assistance provided by EDC since March 26 while health workers and frontliners were provided with personal protective equipment like 100 hazmat suits and 300 reusable face masks. The company is also set to distribute on the following days nearly 500 food packs for the frontliners supported by the provincial government.
Further, EDC also donated 126 sacks of rice to more than 600 individuals in Burgos, particularly those that were excluded in the social amelioration program of the national government.
“What makes our relief assistance here in Burgos different from other areas is that the local government initiated to ask the residents to bring their own bag to collect their relief goods, while strictly observing physical distancing. This reduces the use of plastic bags and further narrows down the time spent in repacking. The distribution of goods has so far been running smoothly since it is done per barangay/purok with the updated list coming from the LGU,” Sabarre added.
Since the community quarantine was implemented in March, EDC has so far provided assistance to the LGUs through relief operations, lending of facilities, and fundraising campaigns of its employees.
