The Department of Energy (DOE) has given the green light to six renewable energy (RE) suppliers, led by Lopez and Aboitiz-run firms, to offer cleaner energy options to consumers.
Those given permits to participate in the DOE’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP) include the Lopezes’ BacMan Geothermal, Inc. and First Gen Energy Solutions, SN Aboitiz Power-Magat, Inc., SN Aboitiz Power-Res, Inc., Ayala-led AC Energy Philippines, and Sparc-Solar Powered Agri-Rural Communities Corporation.
DOE Renewable Energy Management Bureau (REMB) director Mylene Capongcol said the six companies were the first ones to apply for permits under the program.
Launched in 2018, the GEOP is a voluntary mechanism which allows consumers that use at least 100 kilowatts to source their power supply from a retail electricity supplier. The program is based on Section 9 of Republic Act 9513 ,or the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.
RE suppliers that wish to join the program should secure from the REMB an operating permit, which authorizes generating companies to supply power to a qualified end user.
