Lopez-led geothermal leader Energy Development Corporation (EDC) stays true to its commitment to provide support to its partner and adjacent communities as it recently donated 2,500 rapid antibody test (RAT) kits to various local government units (LGU) in Leyte and Samar to help them combat the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
EDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility Head for its Leyte geothermal facility, Erwin B. Magallanes, said that supporting its partner communities remains one of its top priorities along with environmental preservation over 40 years since it began operating in the country.
“We’re in business because of the support of the community and the local government here in Leyte and also in Samar. It is our commitment to return the support and share even more of what we have to help them especially during this health crisis,” Magallanes said.
The LGUs who have received the RAT kits for the preliminary testing of possible COVID-19 cases were the Municipality of Kananga (500 kits), Ormoc City (500 kits), Municipality of Albuera (150 kits), Municipality of Media (150 kits), Municipality of Isabel (200 kits), Tacloban City (500 kits), and the City of Catbalogan in Samar (500 kits).
Last July, the company signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the City of Ormoc and Ormoc Sugarcane Planters Association-Farmers Medical Center (OSPA-FMC) for the establishment of a Molecular Laboratory and Testing Center in Ormoc City. EDC donated a state-of-the-art Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) machine and accessory equipment worth P25 million to enable the city and adjacent towns to have its own COVID-19 testing facility that will generate results in a much shorter time.
EDC’s Leyte geothermal facility that straddles Ormoc City and the Municipality of Kananga currently supplies more than 30% of the country’s installed geothermal capacity.
In total, EDC generates over 40% of the Philippines’ renewable energy output and serves about 10% of the country’s overall electricity demand with its installed capacity of 1,499MW. Its over 1,200MW geothermal portfolio accounts for 62% of the country’s total installed geothermal capacity, putting the Philippines on the map as the world’s third largest geothermal power producer.
